Catch me if I fall

I ought to know these things by now

This is a really beautiful, if heartbreaking, song. I think it speaks to a lot of people, myself included. Oh, the things we do when we're young. How wise we think ourselves, and how foolish we actually are! Been having discussions lately on God's wisdom vs the wisdom of the world. No prizes for guessing which one we often rely on. For shame, Mel. You ought to know these things by now.

This is a short version. Hope to hear Lionel play the whole song one day. But for now... The Freshmen. Listen, enjoy, and think about the lyrics.

The Freshmen

When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbing, with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice no

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept and
Now he's guilt-stricken, sobbing, with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

Hey yeah-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-yeah...
Hey-e yeah-ah... Hey-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-yeah-yeah...

Try to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of a like in relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip
We'd say

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held resposible
We fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We were merely freshmen
We were only freshmen

Heh... I remember when Bob and I used to sing this song together out loud way back in 1997... one of those things that really just made our friendship concrete. It really remains one of my most favourite songs of all time.

Each year when I watch the freshmen come it the song never fails to come to mind and bring a wry smile to my lips. "Do they know these things yet?"

Also remember the time in NS i actually burnt the song to CD to listen on my spanking new (back then) DISCMAN - only to realise that the mp3 that I had was right biased. That was rectified quickly. :)

Heh strangely I never ever heard this song till Lionel first played it for me. Guess I'm way behind the (music) times! In 1997, what was I singing out loud? Oh yeah, We Go Together from Grease, and my classmates and I would sing it while actually skipping out the Crescent school gates and doing the hand actions. Haha. Good times.

I can see why this would be a favourite song. There's so much meaning to it, so much melancholy. Every time I hear it I just have to pause and reflect. It's impossible to listen to and not be sober.
