I ought to know these things by now

This is a really beautiful, if heartbreaking, song. I think it speaks to a lot of people, myself included. Oh, the things we do when we're young. How wise we think ourselves, and how foolish we actually are! Been having discussions lately on God's wisdom vs the wisdom of the world. No prizes for guessing which one we often rely on. For shame, Mel. You ought to know these things by now.

This is a short version. Hope to hear Lionel play the whole song one day. But for now... The Freshmen. Listen, enjoy, and think about the lyrics.

The Freshmen

When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbing, with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice no

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept and
Now he's guilt-stricken, sobbing, with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

Hey yeah-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-yeah...
Hey-e yeah-ah... Hey-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-e yeah-yeah-yeah...

Try to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of a like in relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip
We'd say

I can't be held responsible
She was touching her face
I won't be held resposible
We fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

We were merely freshmen
We were only freshmen
